How to Improve Your Writing

Updated: Jul 10, 2019

While I believe editorial support is critical to writing excellence, there are many things you can do on your own to improve your writing and prepare yourself and your work for editorial oversite.

First, you should be reading. Read for enjoyment, but also broaden your horizons. Read things outside your comfort zones and preferred genres. Read books that have stood the test of time. Read books by people who have proven themselves to be great writers, and study their craft and technique. Collaborate with other writers, who are committed to improving their craft. Find beta readers to offer you feedback, and be willing to do the same.

These sorts of practices will carry you a long way as your writing projects develop. I would generally encourage collaboration with fellow writers and running your manuscript by beta readers before you seek out professional editorial support, especially if your budget is tight. If you’re past that stage or just need an experienced set of eyes on your work and you’re prepared to invest in your project, then let’s talk.
